Promotional Codes
Capitalizing on market opportunities and designing a highly-requested feature for a new and existing target audience. Extensive research and accounting knowledge were needed to get the project to its full potential.
My Role
Worked in dual capacity as Product Designer and Manager conducting research on customer feedback and interviews. Consult with internal stakeholders and system experts in order to understand how a new feature would interact with existing accounting and API requirements.
Project Goals
Increase product sales by building a way to incentivize membership sales and promotional reporting.
- Create a new page to build custom promo codes to be redeemed online and in-house
- Allow promo codes to be redeemed online.
- Adjust existing accounting structure so customers could report on revenue given away

- Have a code automatically apply for some promotions
- Funnel promotion discount into its own accounting group for optimized reporting
- Add a date range for a promotion (people were waking up at midnight to change prices!)
- Discount enrollment fees and membership dues - the two largest needs that would deliver the most value

- Why introduce so early and not in checkout? Two reasons:
- Our larger clubs use APIs heavily to funnel their customers to the right membership for them. And automatically applied promotion reinforces their discount right away
- The sales process has a lot of steps, and there was concern about dropout rates. Early display of promotional value keeps customers invested.
Adjust existing accounting structure
- Club Automation did not have the accounting structure for customers to report on discounts given away. Previously, discounted values disappeared from all reporting.
- Working with stakeholders, I determined the best way to use our existing structure to facilitate discount reporting.
Project Outcome
This project solved huge pain points for our users. Mainly: Users no longer need to manually input discounts for monthly membership promotions. No one needed to wake up at midnight to change their promotional prices anymore. I created the ability for promotions to automatically apply, reducing human error for online and in-person sales. Paved the way for users to report on revenue given away - which Club Automation had never been able to do before.
